WESTWERK.

Consider the structure of the coin pushing machines you find in games arcades. You insert a coin at the top of the machine, there may be several slots to provide the illusion of choice and tactical possibilities. The coin topples down a wall indented with barriers, diverting its course in a random fashion. Once the coin reaches the bottom, it joins the many other coins left by previous failed attempts. The coins pile up on horizontal, shelflike surfaces which mechanically reciprocate back and forth in a hypnotic breathing motion. The con-nection of the coin to the back wall of the machine when the surface retracts causes the coin to shift closer to the edge, the coins build up in ever more precarious piles. Once the player has put enough coins into the machine and enough coins have piled up on the edge, the friction between
them is no longer enough to hold them together in their groupings and they cascade down to yet another shifting layer. There might be several
of these layers granting the further pleasure of witnessing

and attempting to predict the cause and effect and potential reward when the coins fall off the edge of the bottom tier and into an open collection window, accessible to the player at the bottom of the machine. It is like prospecting through montaged images in layers on a surface, hoping for the reward of a coherent or surprising image to emerge from the chaos. Engagement stems from the precarious illusion of being able to control a process of cause and effect. The reward is the means by which to start the process over again.
