Westwerk e. V. will be responsible for mentoring the artist in residence. Westwerk is an open artists’ centre with regular art and music events. This enables contacts to be made, including to the Hamburg cultural scene.
The grant recipient must take out health and personal liability insurance at their own expense for the period of residence; residence permits/visas if necessary are also the responsibility of the grant recipients.
Additionally, the artist will receive a one-off subsidy of
€ 500 towards the costs of running and organising a final presentation. The place and format of the final presentation will be agreed with Westwerk. Smaller exhibitions and media-based presentations of artistic work as part of a public event are also conceivable, as are lectures, presentations of work or discussions with artists in the bar room or possibly in the hall, and will be supported by Westwerk.
The artists’ centre is not affiliated to a hotel business, and so the grant recipient will be personally responsible for the care
of the premises. Preparation of meals is also the recipient’s own responsibility. The recipient will be expected to treat the furnishings and fixtures of the accommodation with care,
and the continuation of the arrangement will be dependent on this; this must be confirmed in writing. There is a no-smoking policy on the premises and unfortunately no family members or pets are permitted to live there. During the stay, the artist will have the opportunity to explore and get to know Hamburg.
Professional international artists resident outside Germany, from the fields of the visual arts, photography and film, with
an interest in the Hamburg cultural scene and the desire to network culturally in Hamburg are invited to apply for the residency.
Applications may be made in German or in English and
should be supported by the following documents:
– informal covering letter with contact details
(max. 1 page of A4)
– personal statement including project outline
(max. 2 pages of A4)
– curriculum vitae in tabular form
– proof of private personal liability insurance
– evidence of artistic work (photos, catalogues, media reports/reviews, website, CD-ROMs, etc.)
Following the residency, the grant recipient will be expected
to produce a written report on experience gained and make this available for the Ministry for Culture and Media to use no later than one month following completion of the residency.
